His research interests include the geographic variation and global extent of the continental crust, migration of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, geochemistry of metamorphic rocks, petrology of serpentinite, the geochemistry of water and Martian regolith, and the geology of Yellowstone National Park. He has published over 80 articles in refereed journals, edited special issues of several mineralogical publications, presented over 30 posters at national and international meetings, and co-authored the books Geology of the Continental Crust (2005), The Continental Crust (2012), and The Geology of Mars (2013). He has been an active participant in the outreach activities of the Geological Society of America and the Geological Society of America's center for geoscience education, and has given guest lectures at institutions in the United States, Canada, and Japan. In 2011, he was featured in an NRC video series on geologists over the age of 40. He is currently serving as the president of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the world's largest professional society for Earth, planetary, and space sciences and as a member of the AGU Geology & Geophysics Editorial Board.
As a student, Kent has been awarded fellowships from the National Science Foundation, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Geological Society of America, and the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society. He has also won several honors including the University of Illinois' William A. Dudley Award for Teaching Excellence, the Carleton College Distinguished Teaching Award, the John C. Fisher Award for Outstanding Teaching, and a 2006 Presidential Teaching Award.
While a student, Kent taught geology and spent summers working as a high-school science and math teacher for the National Science Foundation's National Summer Learning Programs. He earned his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1997) and M.A. (2000) and Ph.D. (2005) from the University of Missouri-Columbia. His undergraduate advisor was Robert L. DeMarco, and his graduate advisors were David Mogk and Larry Schafer.
He also is an active member of the Geosciences faculty at the University of Utah. He has been involved in undergraduate research at the U of U since 1989. In 1991, he co-founded the Utah Undergraduate Research Institute to increase the number of graduate-level research experiences for Utah's undergraduates. He also serves as the Director of the Utah Geological Association and of the Society for Newcomers to the Geosciences.
