Pélagie la voleuse was written as a response to the Algerianmen's demand that women give up their political activities and dedicate themselves to the house.To everyone, it seemed that the house was the only place of safety, as a woman's body isengulfed by her role as a mother. Boucetta pointed out that the house is always there, butfear is always at hand and there are many places where women are not safe. In the book,Pélagie is not a mother, yet she is the subject of two of the story's three sections. A mother,the novel tells us, should be the universe of unconditional love, but the only woman whoPélagie loves is the baby who is born to her. She lives alone, is lonely, and at times she even lamentsher condition. The novel ends with Pélagie being condemned to death for participating in the Algerian Revolution.Yet how can she be condemned? Hasn't she proved that the house is not the only place of safety? Otherinnocent children have been killed by the police during the Algerian revolution.
