That said, I'd imagine that the price of X-Plane 10 will go down, or at least be kept stable. As an X-Plane fan, that'd be great, but I don't think it's something that's going to happen. I guess you can save a few bucks by buying it on the cheap, but that'll just go to buying a new version, and they've already hinted that there will be a new version. Indeed, as soon as you buy X-Plane 11, the disk you bought X-Plane 10 with will give you the option to download the X-Plane 11 disk you need to use it. So if it's something you really want, I'd buy the disk on the cheap, but I'd expect a price drop, even if it's just minor.

So yeah, the DRM is designed such that it's hard to remove, and if you really want to get rid of it, you'd need to buy X-Plane 11. I'd really hope that they do this, because it'd be great for the X-Plane community, it'll make people feel more comfortable buying X-Plane with the software intact, and it'd make sure that people who bought X-Plane 10 just get a discount on X-Plane 11. If they can't do that, I'd really hope they do something to stop this happening.

I do think that the move to Electron is significant, though. I don't think that you can make a distinction between the Windows UI and Windows GUI, but I do think it's a logical step. If the X-Plane UI was written using Chromium, too, then it'd be logical to see the X-Plane UI running on Chrome, too. That's just how it is right now.
